undocumented californians

The Food4All campaign is releasing a new infographic highlighting data from the Public Policy Institute of California (PPIC).

California’s social safety net protects families during times of economic hardship – but undocumented Californians are unjustly excluded from many safety net programs due solely to immigration status. California Poverty Measure (CPM) data shows the disproportionate prevalence of poverty among undocumented Californians and severe economic disparities in the state.

41% of undocumented children and young adults ages 0-26 in California are living in poverty.

Throughout their lives, undocumented children and young adults will navigate systems that exclude them while experiencing systemic discrimination. Compared to the statewide average for all Californians aged 0-26, they are twice as likely to experience poverty.

1 in 10 (11%) undocumented Californians are living in deep poverty.

Deep poverty is a chronic condition that persists over generations. Today, undocumented immigrants don’t have access to many programs that can disrupt cyclical poverty.

Gaps in the Safety Net A critical driver of poverty is gaps in the safety net. California has made progress on closing these gaps, but the state’s elected leaders must do more to enact policies that help immigrant families meet their basic needs. CalFresh is California’s most successful anti-poverty program and kept 430,000 children out of poverty in early 2023.

Policy Solution: Food4All Food4All is a movement and campaign fighting for immigrant inclusion in California’s food safety net. Food4All would expand access to food assistance for undocumented immigrants by removing immigration status as a barrier to receiving food benefits. Full investment in Food4All is critical so that every Californian, regardless of age or immigration status, can access the food and resources they want and need.
