Deepak Chopra

It’s not easy to get on Deepak Chopra’s schedule these days, let alone find him. Except during the Covid pandemic, he’s been in nearly constant motion for three decades. After Glastonbury, his itinerary would take him to Davos, Riyadh, Mallorca, and Ladakh, a Buddhist center in the mountains of northern India. “The only way to catch my dad,” his son, Gotham Chopra, has said, “is to catch up with him.”

His success is follow by four laws:

The First Law of Deepak Chopra:

Accept Opportunity

To hear Chopra tell it, his entire business career was unplanned, almost accidental. “It was just happening,” he insists. “I didn’t look for it out.”

His son, Gotham, agrees: “I don’t think of him as a businessman. I think of my dad as an artist, who never let a business plan or a strategy get in the way of his creativity. His brand evolved in the absence of a brand strategy.”

That may be true. But Chopra did have an eye for opportunity, an appetite for risk, and endless amounts of hustle. Plus more than his share of dumb luck. And most of all, an open and inquiring mind.”

The Second Law of Deepak:

Be Relentless

Chopra had wanted to be a writer since he was young, but his father, a doctor in the Indian army, insisted he go to medical school. They were at loggerheads throughout their teens. “But he was very clever,” Chopra says. “He would give me books, novels where the protagonist was always a doctor.”

After a decade practicing in the U.S., Chopra had risen to chief of staff at a more prestigious hospital outside Boston. He had trained as a neuroendocrinologist, studying what he calls the “molecules of emotion,” meaning neurotransmitters such as dopamine and serotonin–chemicals that affect our state of mind. In his practice, he found that very often a patient’s emotions would dictate his or her fate, more than any medical measures.

In his spare time, he wrote up case studies of patients who had recovered in spite of dire prognoses–and other patients who had died for no medically apparent reasons.

The Third Law of Deepak:

Love Your Haters

Despite all of his accolades, his followers, and his success –or perhaps because of them–Chopra’s critics have labeled him a huckster and a fraud who peddles pseudoscience and woo. Others use blunter language: In a 2015 journal article, five psychologists characterized his tweets as “pseudo-profound bullshit.”

The satirical online “random Deepak Chopra quote generator” underscores their point, mixing up the master’s favorite catchphrases into nonsense aphorisms like “The secret of the universe exists as nonlocal happiness.”

The Fourth Law of Deepak:

Face the Future

In late August, Chopra strides into the shiny new headquarters of Columbia Business School, in Manhattan, to speak to a class taught by her friend Sharad Devarajan on artificial intelligence and virtual reality.

Chopra has a love-hate relationship with science and technology and is now fascinated with artificial intelligence.
