Los Angeles Councilman Kevin de León announced that he will not resign from his seat on the city council.
The announcement was made known in an interview on Univision’s national newscast.
As pressures build in the community and in political circles in L.A. Due to the racist comments in a recording released last week, De Leon said that there are still many things to do in the city and that he would seek to help solve them. Also, he apologized to his community and insisted that racist comments do not define his political trajectory.
“I’m so sorry. I am extremely sorry, and that is why I apologize to all my people, to my entire community, for the damage caused by the painful words that were carried out that day last year,” De León said in the interview with Noticiero Univision anchor León Krauze, according to the transcript. The interview was conducted at Univision 34’s studio in Los Angeles.
“No, I will not resign, because there is a lot of work ahead,” De León said, citing the homelessness crisis.
At the same time, an identified group of Los Angeles citizens started a petition on the Change.org website. where they ask for his resignation: “Los Angeles City Council Members Kevin de León and Gil Cedillo must resign now!
De León has told several media outlets he is refusing to step down, after racist comments he made in a leaked audio recording released by the L.A. Times.
De León’s Council District 14 has the highest density of the Los Angeles homeless population, where five people per day die in Skid Row alone.”
