Alberto Granados loses visa after border agents grill him on connections to repeat offender and political ally Édgar Alejandro “V”.
Alberto Granados attempted to enter the United States on Thursday night. Immigration authorities detained him so security agents could question him about his ties to a trafficker.
Victoria, Tamaulipas – The United States government detained and revoked the visa of Alberto Granados Fávila, mayor of Matamoros, as part of an ongoing drug trafficking investigation.
Granados Fávila tried to enter U.S. territory on the night of Thursday, April 17. At the second checkpoint, he was stopped by agents from the U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP).
In the early hours of the morning, the mayor was questioned about his relationship with Édgar Alejandro “V”, a businessman who was arrested in possession of 8.8 kilograms of cocaine in Brownsville, Texas, on January 27, 2025.
Sources from the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) reported that this was the third time Édgar Alejandro had been caught attempting to smuggle drugs into the U.S.
Following the interrogation, U.S. authorities decided to revoke Granados Fávila’s visa.
The government of Matamoros has not officially confirmed the incident. However, the mayor’s previously scheduled public events have been postponed.
Elefante Blanco confirmed that Édgar Alejandro’s wife and brother hold important positions within the Matamoros city government. Granados Fávila has even defended them publicly.
Édgar Alejandro “V” participated in political events for the Morena party and in Alberto Granados Fávila’s mayoral campaign. When questioned, the mayor acknowledged the photos showing them together.
“I want to make it clear that I have no family or professional ties with him. He is not a government official or a supplier for my administration. I have nothing to hide. Just like I have pictures with him, I have pictures with thousands of citizens I greet every day as I walk the streets and neighborhoods of Matamoros. I’ve never refused to take a photo and I never will,” stated the Morena party member.
Édgar Alejandro “V” is listed as the owner of at least two businesses in Matamoros and Monterrey, Nuevo León, according to Mexican federal records. He also owns a restaurant in Matamoros. This is the third time he has been arrested for drug trafficking since 2021.
