After so many setbacks among Latino politicians in California, Alex Padilla’s triumph in the Senate represents an affirmation of Latino power. What you can get to represent at the national level is limitless.
After wear and tear at the local and national level after the scandals with former Los Angeles council members Jose Huizar and Nury Martinez and now council members Kevin de Leon and Gil Cedillo, Padilla’s victory provides a breather to the representation of Latinos in California.
Padilla grew up in a poor area of Los Angeles, he knows the problems that afflict Latinos in California and will undoubtedly be a good role model in Washington.
His victory in his election solidifies him as the state’s first elected Latino to the Senate.
Without a doubt, Padilla has established himself as a key player with great influence in the political media of LA and California.
Padilla has long made his personal story part of his public appeal, from his first race for the Los Angeles City Council in 1999 to his current campaign as overwhelming favorite against Meuser in a rematch of their 2018 race for California secretary of state. In an odd twist, voters in November will cast ballots twice: once to fill the last two months of Kamala Harris’ term and the other for a new six-year term.
