The massive crossing of migrants across the border between Mexico and the United States, which has worsened in recent months, has led President Joe Biden to return to one of the great promises of his predecessor, Donald Trump: to expand the border wall.

The White House has just announced that it will build a 20-mile section of metal fencing in South Texas in an effort to stop crossings of the Rio Grande (called Grande in the United States).

Building a border wall was one of Trump’s signature policies as president, which Democrats fiercely opposed.

In 2020, Biden promised that he would not build another meter of wall if elected. His administration passed a statement after taking office that said building a wall along the southern border “is not a serious political solution.”

One of Biden’s first executive actions halted construction of the wall. The White House said at the time that building the barrier was “not a serious policy solution.”

Biden told reporters Thursday that Congress had appropriated the funding for the border wall and the administration was required by law to use it for that purpose, per a White House pool report.

“I tried to get them to reappropriate, to redirect that money. They didn’t. They wouldn’t,” he said.

Trump posted on Truth Social earlier Thursday that Biden’s decision proved “that I was right” in building a border wall.

“I will await his apology!” Trump wrote.
