California Highway Patrol officers will be out in full force and on the lookout for drunk drivers over the Thanksgiving weekend, officials warn.

A CHP “maximum enforcement period” will begin at 6 p.m. Wednesday and continue through Sunday night, according to the agency. Officers will pay special attention to intoxicated drivers and seat belt violations.

Twenty-seven deadly crashes took place in CHP jurisdictions across the state during last year’s Thanksgiving period, officials said. Officers arrested 1,047 drivers for DUI.

“These sobering numbers highlight the importance of making smart, safe decisions behind the wheel,” according to a CHP statement.

CHP Commissioner Sean Duryee urged responsible celebration.

“Thanksgiving is a time for togetherness, and our mission is to ensure everyone reaches their destinations safely,” he said. “We encourage everyone to prepare their vehicles for travel, leave early to account for heavy traffic, buckle up, and never drive impaired. The well-being and safety of others starts with making good decisions behind the wheel.”

On average, those facing a first-time DUI charge receive about $13,500 in fines, along with a suspended license.

“The CHP urges everyone to play their part in making the holidays safe: buckle up, drive sober, refrain from speeding, and avoid distractions,” the statement said.
