Quiet but determined, Marcela Luevanos had been contemplating having her own storefront for a while. A lot of hard work and training had given her a stable customer base and the necessary equipment. What remained was leaving her fears behind and finally taking the plunge.
“Everything fell into place. The shopping center near my home and my children’s school opened. It was a good company, attracting good businesses, so I felt it was my opportunity. But it wasn’t easy. I went, inquired, they gave me the lease agreement, and it sat on my desk for a month. I would glance at it, some days I would read it halfway and then put it back. I kept eyeing it until one day I told myself, ‘enough, it’s time!’ I signed it and processed everything needed to open. Skin by Marcela finally had its own storefront,” says a smiling Marcela.
Her storefront, her own space, has had a positive impact on her clientele.
“It doesn’t feel strange; it’s not just a business. It’s a place that exudes peace. People come, sit, and spend time dedicated to themselves, happy and at peace,” adds the skincare expert.
In addition to having a customer base, Marcela is not someone who remains inactive. She actively promotes her services with her friends, at soccer games, in the park, and with teachers.
“I believe many women would like a skincare treatment, but they hesitate. So when they meet me and see me talking so comfortably about what I do, they get encouraged. They feel confident to have their first treatment,” she says.
When Marcela received the keys to her storefront, her joy was unparalleled.
“It’s one thing to plan it, analyze it, and another to have the keys in your hands. To open the door, feel the space around you, see the transformations you’re making, the mark you’re leaving. One of the motivations I had was remembering what they used to tell us at the school where I graduated as a Licensed Esthetician: not to even think about having our own business, it was impossible. I heard that. But Marcela is ‘muy aferrada,’ as they say in Mexico.”
“A lot of people are surprised when I tell them I’m very introverted. I think a lot about things for myself, analyze them, solve them. When I get to know people, I open up. It was the same with this. I thought and thought, remembered those words, and they became a challenge for me. I had to have my own business, my storefront,” she says.
Marcela did her calculations, reviewed her customer list and expenses. It was possible. That’s when she took the final step.
“I owe a lot to my customers. They have been very loyal, supporting me from the beginning,” she says.
Her children love their mother’s adventure. They know they can count on her, that her work is close to home and school, and that she is a very entrepreneurial person. They are proud.
“Discipline is fundamental. Organizing yourself, being there,” she adds. “My challenge now is to launch my own line of products; we will present them shortly.”
