“The candy labor cost has gone up a lot because of inflation,” Tang said. “The workers need to have a higher income so that they can survive.”
Here’s some news about Halloween that’s worth a few extra boos this year.
The cost of candy is going up by a lot. Prices are up about 13% this year, according to the U.S. Bureau of Labor.
UCLA supply-chain expert Professor Christopher Tang says candy is so expensive because of the cost of ingredients.
It’s also because these products are mainly made in the United States.
“The labor cost has gone up a lot because of inflation,” Tang said. “The workers need to have a higher income so that they can survive.”
“All the ingredients from wrapping paper to the basic ingredients like sugar, and also the cocoa beans that we have imported from Africa. So as a result, every single ingredient, element, and the wages are going up.”
According to the National Retail Federation, the average household will spend about $35 on candy this year – up from $30.
A recent Fox News poll echoes what many other polls have shown. Ninety-one percent of registered voters were extremely or very concerned about inflation/higher prices. Fifty-one percent of Democrats were extremely concerned. People tell pollsters their grocery prices are higher than a year ago, and that they expect them to continue to rise.
In the new Economist/Liberal Patriot online poll that explored more than a dozen ordinary expenses, 41% said they were spending a lot more and 30% a little more this year on grocery staples than last year. In the mid-October Harvard/Harris poll, 49% of registered voters said their financial situation was getting worse, and 26% improving. In the mid-October Economist/YouGov poll, 54% said the economy was getting worse and only 17% better.
What is the most given candy on Halloween?
“Reese’s Peanut Butter Cups, Peanut M&M’s, and classic M&M’s reaffirm their status as Halloween favorites among Americans coast to coast,” Laurentia Romaniuk, Instacart’s trends expert, told FOX Business.
Why is candy cheaper after Halloween?
After Halloween, the prices of candy can go down 50 percent or more or there will at least be some sort of discount you could find. So, you might ask, why does Halloween candy become cheaper after Halloween? The reason is that stores need to sell out the leftover Halloween candy they have.
