With two awards and eight Oscar nominations for best foreign film, Argentina has established itself as the Latin American country most recognized by the Hollywood Academy, a situation that can be consolidated this March 12 with “Argentina, 1985.”
The Argentine film starts out as one of the top favorites to win the golden statuette, after obtaining the Golden Globe for best international film, an award that serves as a kind of advance of the Oscars.
Other Argentine awards
The success of Argentine cinema in Hollywood is not limited to the “best foreign film” category. The most notable case is that of the musician and composer Gustavo Santaolalla, who won the Oscar for best soundtrack for “Brokeback Mountain” (2005) and “Babel” (2006), an award previously won by pianist Luis Bacalov for “El postman” (1995).
Likewise, the artistic director Eugenio Zanetti won the Oscar for best production design for “Restoration” (1995), the Franco-Argentine producer Nicolas Schmerkin picked up the statuette for the best animated short film for “Logorama” (2009) and the screenwriters Armando Bó and Nicolás Giacobone won the Oscar for best original screenplay for “Birdman” (2014).
Ricardo Darín, the star of the film, takes the success of the film in stride.
“I’ve been as lucky as my parents weren’t as actors,” he commented during a recent interview. “Many times I have been valued much more than I value myself, and then I think, ‘Could it be that I deserve so much?'”
The latest example of his relationship with luck is his role as prosecutor Julio Strassera in Argentina, 1985, a historical court drama about the trial of the Juntas, when military leaders were prosecuted for human rights violations during the previous dictatorship. Directed by Santiago Mitre, it earned Argentina an Oscar nomination for best international feature film.
