It may seem like a long way off, but the terrorist attacks unleashed in the Middle East could have global repercussions. For this reason, the Police were increasing security and patrols around Jewish institutions in Los Angeles, Beverly Hills and Santa Monica Saturday following the Hamas attack against Israel.
“The Los Angeles Police Department is aware of the terrorist attacks in the Middle East and lives lost. In those areas where we serve both our Jewish and Muslim communities, we will be conducting extra patrol to ensure the safety of all,” LAPD Chief Michel Moore wrote on X.
“We are appalled by this act of terrorism by Hamas against the citizens and civilian communities in Israel,” Beverly Hills Mayor Julian Gold said. “We call on President Biden and Congress to act swiftly in support of Israel. Additionally, we hope all peace-loving nations of the world and the United Nations, will condemn this senseless violence. Our hearts are with the people of Israel as we stand together and support Israel defending itself and condemning this heinous act.”
Here are some of the tips that the authorities recommend to the population:
Prepare for Violence and Terrorist Attacks
Stay Alert. Always be aware of your environment and any possible dangers.Observe what is going on around you and avoid distractions such as texting, listening to headphones or being on your cell phone; particularly when in areas at high risk of a terrorist attack (ex. Large public gatherings)
If you see something, say something to local authorities. That includes suspicious packages, people behaving strangely or someone using strange communications.
Observe warning signs. Signs might include unusual or violent communications, substance abuse, expressed anger or intent to cause harm. These warning signs may increase over time.
Have an exit plan. Identify exits and areas to hide wherever you go, including work, school and special events.
Learn lifesaving skills. Take trainings such as You Are the Help Until Help Arrives and first aid to assist the wounded before help arrives.
Stay Safe During Violence and Terrorism
Seek safety. Getting away from the attacker is the top priority. Leave your belongings behind and get away. Call 9-1-1 when you are safe and describe the attacker, location and weapons.
Cover and Hide
Cover and hide if you can’t evacuate. Find a place to hide out of sight of the attacker and put a solid barrier between yourself and the threat if possible. Lock and block doors, close blinds and turn off lights. Keep silent.
Defend, Disrupt, Fight
Fight only as a last resort. When you can’t run or cover, attempt to disrupt the attack or disable the attacker. Be aggressive and commit to your actions. Recruit others to ambush the attacker with makeshift weapons such as chairs, fire extinguishers, scissors, books, etc. Be prepared to cause severe or lethal injury to the attacker.
