International Nelson Mandela Day is observed to mark the birth anniversary of the great South African leader and former President Nelson Mandela. This year, the day, celebrated on July 18, will mark the 105th birth anniversary of Nelson Mandela. On 10 May 1994, he was inaugurated as South Africa’s first democratically elected President. He dedicated his life to advocating for humanity as a human rights lawyer, a prisoner of conscience, an international peacemaker, and the first democratically elected president of free South Africa.
Mandela is referred to as the “Father of the Nation” in South Africa.
“Climate, Food & Solidarity” is the theme for this year. The day aims to encourage discussions, outline and reflect on the work being done and the work that still needs to fight climate change and food insecurity across the globe.
