Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum Pardo warned the United States this Sunday that “Mexico is no one’s piñata,” during her participation in the Housing for Well-being event in Campeche, Campeche.

“With the United States, Mexico is no one’s piñata,” the Mexican president declared to those attending the event, adding that US politicians should mind their own business.

Sheinbaum said this was in reference to the US electoral context, stating:

Next year in the United States, there will be elections for many state governments. So, they should focus on their own country, which has plenty of problems, and not use Mexico as a campaign site.

The head of the Federal Executive firmly emphasized Mexico’s position vis-à-vis its northern neighbor.

Mexico teaches the United States a lot about many things: values, ethics, development.

During her speech, the president recalled details of a conversation she had with US President Donald Trump about the fentanyl crisis in the United States.

“One of the first times I spoke with President Trump and we talked about the fentanyl crisis in his country, he asked me if drugs are used in Mexico,” she recounted.

“I told him, well, we do have an addiction problem, but not the size of the United States. Mexico isn’t a big drug user. We do need to address it, and that’s what we’re working on, but they have a bigger problem there.”

The president attributed this difference to Mexican family values.

“When he asked me why, I said, ‘Mexican families have many values. We take care of each other, we protect each other,'” the president explained.

Sheinbaum also mentioned that she informed Trump about “a campaign that began with President López Obrador and that we are now developing against drug use.”
