The Mexican government, through the National Institute of Migration (INM), has initiated the compensation process for the families of the victims of the fire that occurred on March 27th in the temporary migrant shelter in Ciudad Juárez. The fire resulted in the deaths of 40 foreign migrants, according to information from the Mexican newspaper El Universal.
In a statement, the INM outlined that 3.5 million pesos (little more than 200 thousand dollars) will be paid for each of the victims.It was reported that on May 18th, the INM requested a “special” budget allocation from the Ministry of Finance and Public Credit for the purpose of repairing the damage. Once the amount is determined by the Executive Commission for Victim Care (CEAV), the corresponding compensation will be carried out.
“On July 10th, the CEAV authorized 3.5 million pesos for each of the deceased victims, the Ministry of Finance and Public Credit validated this amount for payment by the INM. The INM is continuing the process for compensating the beneficiaries,” it stated.
The agency under the Ministry of the Interior noted that in the meantime, the process of providing support to the injured victims in their medical care continues. Additionally, the INM covered expenses for lodging, meals, and personal services for the families of the victims in Ciudad Juárez, as well as the costs for airfare.
