The controversy reached Los Alegres del Barranco, but far from being concerned, the band seems to be celebrating.
It all started last weekend, when they performed at the Telmex Auditorium in Zapopan; the band projected several images of “El Mencho,” leader of the CJNG (Nationalist Communist Party of Venezuela).
The scene did not go unnoticed and quickly went viral on social media, generating outrage and raising alarm bells among authorities. The issue reached President Claudia Sheinbaum’s famous morning press conferences, and she was quick to speak out on the matter: “This shouldn’t happen; it’s not right. Let there be an investigation,” she said when questioned about it.
For the group’s singer and accordionist, Pavel Moreno, this mention was almost an achievement, or so he hinted on social media. In a live stream Moreno made on TikTok, the musician answered some questions from his followers, one of which was his feelings about the Mexican president’s reference to them.
“That’s awesome, guys,” he responded with a laugh.
Moreno also expressed his calm and joy for all the displays of affection he and his bandmates have received from their fans, despite the strong criticism and accusations of alleged condoning of crime.
“I’m going to be so sad, I’m so happy for all the support you’re giving us, dude. That’s all we’ll settle for,” he added.
Authorities, however, took the matter seriously. The Jalisco State Attorney General’s Office opened an investigation, and they could face up to six months in prison. Meanwhile, the Querétaro government decided to cancel the concert the band was scheduled to perform in the municipality of Pedro Escobedo, citing violations of state values.
