Terri Cortez is one of the most dedicated media voices in the United States, addressing community issues in a personal way, and this time he is no exception.

“The politicians have to be exposed if these funds are not given for a cultural center that will change the lives of our children and young people,” he says regarding Assemblyman Anthony Rendon’s proposal to open a first-class cultural center for Latinos in the Southeast.

“We have to awaken the dream among Latinos, give children and young people the opportunity to take classes in art, film, and other disciplines in our community,” he says.

A proposal by Assemblyman Anthony Rendón seeks to promote art in Southeast Los Angeles with the construction of the SELA Cultural Arts Center, which could be a game-changer, providing a home base for arts, culture, education, and resources for the Latino community.

SELA Cultural Center, the next great mecca for the arts in Southeast Los Angeles

“If politicians do not approve the funds, they must be held accountable for this. They approve needles for injecting drugs and other things. How is it possible that they do not approve funds to educate our youth? They label them as gang members and do not approve educational funds so that they can have a healthy option in the Southeast. Who are the responsible legislators? We need a place for entertainment, education,” says Cortez, the number one Spanish radio host in Los Angeles.

For Juan Escobedo, the founder and director of The East LA Society of Film and Arts (TELASOFA), this project is vital for the community.

“It’s deeper than the cultural center; it’s about changing the habits of our young people. For many, going to the West Side or downtown LA is easy, but not for our young people. Getting on a bus, taking the subway, and traveling for an hour or two is not so simple. It’s critical that children and young people can ride a bike and take classes in acting, art, drawing,” says Escobedo, the leader of the petition promoted on Parriva.com.

Terri Cortez insists on promoting this petition among the people of South Gate and Southeast.

“We have to expose those responsible for preventing this from happening, make them known. It’s time to make changes and not remain silent. Our young people are not gang members or drug addicts; they need an opportunity from a public place for their voices to be heard. It’s our community, our children and young people, and if this project is not achieved, we will be failing our community,” he concludes.
