Ford, Toyota, and Honda ship over 85% of their Mexico-made cars to the U.S.—will new tariffs force a major shift?

Mexico’s automotive industry could suffer a major setback in production and exports due to the U.S. imposing tariffs on goods produced in Mexico and Canada.

Automotive exports represent a substantial portion of Mexico’s shipments to the U.S. and highlight the high level of regional integration.

In response to the U.S. announcing a 25% tariff on vehicles assembled in Mexico, it is worth analyzing which automotive companies export the largest number of vehicles abroad.

According to the National Institute of Statistics and Geography (Inegi), Mexico exported 3,479,086 vehicles in 2024, marking a 5.4% increase compared to 2023. The United States was the main destination for Mexican auto exports, receiving 79.7% of that total—equivalent to 2,771,287 vehicles.

Gabriel Padilla, Director General of the National Auto Parts Industry, stated that vehicle costs will increase by $3,000 to $5,000 per unit, depending on the segment.
