They are Mexicans, from a good economic background, and for years, they have decided to retire and dedicate themselves to traveling. They have been to Turkey, Europe, and Canada.

Now, they are preparing to go to Asia. It was not in their plans; they wanted to go to the East Coast of the United States, but due to the political climate and anti-immigrant sentiment, they decided to cancel it, even if they lost money.

“We don’t need to face situations we don’t need. The world is very big and very beautiful. Racism, if they hear us speak Spanish, if they get upset about that, it’s not worth it. Instead, we’re going to Vietnam, Cambodia, and Thailand,” says Alberto who prefers not to give his last name.

This kind of boycott isn’t limited to their travels but extends to product purchases.

“Guadalajara is full of Chinese products—cars, electronics, everything—and it’s of excellent quality. The United States has already lost its hegemony, they realized the huge deficit they have, but their strategy is wrong. It’s fine to fight with your neighbors, but not with everyone at the same time. According to a recent report by the research firm Tourism Economics, it is projected that travel to this destination will decrease by 5.5 percent this year, instead of growing nearly 9 percent as originally forecasted. This could represent a yearly reduction of $18 billion in tourist spending in 2025.

Since Trump announced a 25 percent tariff on many Canadian products, the number of Canadian citizens crossing the border by car at certain border points has dropped by as much as 45 percent on some days compared to last year. Canada is the leading source of international tourists to the U.S. Air Canada has announced it will reduce its flights to some U.S. vacation destinations, such as Las Vegas, due to decreased demand.

Some potential visitors have cited a hostile political climate as part of their doubts about visiting the U.S., including the aggressive rhetoric toward foreigners, immigrants, and the LGBT community.
