More than 107,000 people are living in New York City shelters and more than half, 57,000, are undocumented immigrants. Every day more buses with immigrants arrive at this “sanctuary city”.
New York City pays $383 per day for each immigrant in room, board, medical care and other services. This year it has invested $1,450 million to maintain them. In recent days, an average of 2,900 immigrants have arrived on buses from Texas. If the trend continues, in three years the cost will amount to 12,000 million dollars from the municipal budget.
New York Mayor Eric Adams has said there is no more space to offer refuge to so many immigrants and has asked federal authorities for help. “We didn’t create this crisis, but we are experiencing it more than any other city in this nation,” said Mayor Adams. “It’s an unsustainable situation.”
There are 194 hostels in New York City.
In the school year that ended last month, there were more than 18,000 students who arrived with this new wave of undocumented immigrants. There is a shortage of bilingual teachers who know Spanish, and the city was forced to shell out an additional $90 million to serve students primarily from Central and South America.
