And now, Latinos in Southeast Los Angeles will be able to see the benefit of his art after the Board of Supervisors’ approval of the SELA Cultural Center in South Gate.

In an interview with the Spanish newspaper El País, Gehry highlights the importance of this project for him.
— “This is a neighborhood where children have ten years less to live because they don’t have parks,” he points out. “It is a public health map. It’s all red with problems, but no one gives a damn. Even if we scream and kick…,” he told El País.

Frank Gehry expressed his satisfaction with the Board of Supervisors’ approval.

“It will have a 500-seat concert hall, a yoga room, a movie theater, art galleries… It will be on a single street near the Los Angeles River. It’s incredible, I still don’t believe it will be reality,” he told the Spanish newspaper. “This world-class art center will showcase our culture and creativity, uplifting our incredible artists,” he said.

”This is a neighborhood where children have ten years less to live because they don’t have parks,” he points out.

Assemblyman Anthony Rendón during a press conference held at the future center’s site.
The architect plans to build 16 hectares of green areas in the middle of a population with high poverty rates.
“With 800 million dollars I can do it, and all those children will be able to have a little more life. It sounds like a lot of money, but I am sure that health services cost them more,” he told the newspaper.
